Daniela Louzada Esteves, CA – San Diego World Affairs Council (SDWAC) held its annual luncheon on June 13th. SDWAC is a globally focused non-profit organization serving the citizens of San Diego for over half a century. Founded in 1954, it seeks to serve the community by providing educational programs and activities that are focused on international relations, economics, politics, and culture.
The event hosted keynote speaker Gaston Luken—Congressman of Mexico’s PAN Party and member of the federal Chamber of Deputies inMexico. In his speech, Congressman Luken discussed various political subjects and policies that influence bothMexicoand theU.S.One major issue examined included the war on drugs south of the border, an on-going armed conflict between drug cartels fighting for regional control and the forces of the Mexican government. Congressman Luken pointed out the necessity of both countries to work together in order to solve this emerging issue.
On a more positive note, Congressman Luken also discussed the economic growth that Mexicohas experienced and the opportunities his country has to offer U.S.businesses. Mexicois the 13th largest economy in the world and has proven to be an important source of global economic growth. “Economic growth and stability is not a goal, it is a tool that should be used for better living conditions” said Congressman Luken.
The SDWAC is an important forum for the community ofSan Diego. A branch of the World Affairs Councils of America, a national organization—the SDWAC is one of more than 90 independent associations seeking to help educate communities in the U.S. on global issues. The goal of the SDWAC is to bring to San Diego influential speakers from the spheres of government, academics, the private sector, and the non-profit/non-governmental sector to address our community. A key event—the “Great Decisions” forum promotes discussions and exchanges of ideas about critical foreign policy issues.
